Author Study Objectives

"Meet the Author, Eric Carle!"  (Introductory Lesson)    
       Once introduced to the author Eric Carle and his works, students will correctly identify the sequence of events from                The Very Hungry Caterpillar by creating a timeline. 


"Mixed Up Phonics!"  (Phonics)       
       After listening to The Mixed-Up Chameleon, students will correctly match the letters of the alphabet to pictures that begin with the same sound, with 80% accuracy.  Furthermore, students will be able to correctly assemble and blend initial sounds to produce appropriate words, with 80% accuracy.  

 
"Proper Punctuation!"  (Fluency)      
       After listening to A House for Hermit Crab, students will demonstrate proper punctuation by correctly punctuating incorrect sentences with 80% accuracy. 

"Rhyming with Animals!"  (Phonological Awareness)      
       After reading Eric Carle’s Animals, Animals and reviewing onsets and rimes, students will demonstrate their ability to rhyme by correctly identifying rhyming words with a chosen animal’s name.  The students will then present their rhymes to their peers.  

 
"Comprehending the Rooster!"   (Comprehension)      
       After reading Eric Carle’s Rooster’s Off to See the World, students will use their understanding of the story to create a shorter version of the book, including the beginning, middle, and ending of the original story.  Accurate portrayals of the beginning, middle, and end will receive full credit (100%).  

 
"Monstrously New Vocabulary!"   (Vocabulary)      
       After reading The Greedy Python, students will demonstrate their learned vocabulary by completing sentences with the most appropriate vocabulary word with 80% accuracy.  

 
"Goodbye, Mr. Carle!"  (Closing Lesson)      
        After listening and reading three Eric Carle books, in centers, students will actively participate in subsequent activities culminating in an appreciation for Eric Carle’s literature and illustrations.
