Evidence of Student Learning

The Friday before beginning the five-day Addition unit, I assessed each student individually on their prior knowledge of addition.  During rest time, I called each of my students to my desk (individually), and displayed the following problem on a piece of paper:  3 + 2 = ?  I showed my students the problem, and asked, "Three plus two equals what?"  I recorded all of my students' responses (as seen below).  Furthermore, I did not tell any of my students the correct response (just in case they would pass along the information to another student/remember for the post-assessment).

The Friday that concluded my five-day Addition unit, I assessed each student individually on their newly-acquired addition skills.  Using the same procedures, I called each student up to my desk and again displayed the problem "3 + 2 = ?" on a piece of paper and asked, "Three plus two equals what?"  I recorded all of my students' responses (as seen below).

Overall, it was evident that students acquired knowledge of addition, and were further more confident in their ability to add two and three addends to generate a sum.
